ELISA WINTER is an eclectic performer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist known most for her elaborate and gnarly cello playing while she sings. Her debut album, Summer and Smoke, was just released on Summer Solstice 2022 (June 21). A musician and performer for well over a decade, Elisa’s playing, singing, and arrangements can be heard on multiple albums and videos. She’s performed her original work and with other bands all over NYC, including Broadway, Rockwood, The Public Theater, Littlefield, LIC CultureLab, and 54 below, to name a few.

ABOUT SUMMER AND SMOKE:

A genre-bending album with cello and raw, visceral lyrics at its core, Summer and Smoke incorporates synth, post-grunge, alternative rock, industrial electronica, lush orchestrations, catchy melodies, and themes of gaslighting, rebirth, and "embracing the change".

While the songs can be enjoyed as singles, Summer and Smoke was created to be listened to from start to finish with its deliberate, seamless transitions and story arc. In order, you can hear it move from a more acoustic sound into a synth landscape as it plays with the tensions between reality and fantasy, truth and gaslighting.

Ironically mostly written before the pandemic, its themes are incredibly poignant at the present moment. Even the song “Post Apocalyptic Vibe” was written before the pandemic and actually inspired by a trip to Havana, Cuba. (The trip was only a few months before lockdown - little did Elisa know how much this song would resonate for years to come). The album is loosely inspired by the Tennessee Williams play of the same title. In writing about the play, Elisa was able to access and eventually write about her own challenging experiences.

I’ve been amazed by the reactions to the album so far - how much people relate to these deeply personal lyrics and stories. It was somewhat terrifying to write so intimately about subjects like abuse and grief, and it has been incredibly gratifying to know that the more revealing and raw the writing, the more we connect with each other.
